The Beginning
At Valinor Somalis, our love affair with the Somali breed began over two decades ago, in the year 2000, when a serendipitous encounter changed our lives forever. It all started with Melanie Askeland, a dear work colleague and passionate breeder of silver Somalis. She convinced us to welcome a kitten into our home, a stunning silver Somali named Askecat Galadriel DuCati. Around the same time, we adopted Xena, a spirited Somali-African Wild Cat cross from breeder Angie Lottering. From the moment these two graceful felines entered our lives, we were utterly captivated by their fox-like elegance, playful antics, and affectionate natures. Their vibrant personalities and breathtaking beauty sparked a passion that would shape our future.
Melanie’s enthusiasm was infectious, and she encouraged us to take Galadriel and Xena to a local cat show. At the show, we were overwhelmed by the admiration our cats received. Time and again, attendees asked if we planned to breed Galadriel, an idea that hadn’t crossed our minds until that moment. The seed was planted, and after much thought, we decided to embark on the adventure of breeding Somalis. That decision marked the beginning of Valinor Somalis, a journey filled with joy, challenges, and countless unforgettable moments.
Over the past 25 years, we’ve dedicated ourselves to breeding Somalis of exceptional quality, focusing on health, temperament, and the breed’s distinctive, elegant type. With guidance from the esteemed Abymoon Cattery and through carefully selected imports from top breeders worldwide, we’ve worked tirelessly to refine our lines. Our cats are more than just breeding stock—they’re beloved members of our family, each with their own quirks and charms. From the mischievous kitten who steals socks to the regal adult who greets us with a soft chirp, our Somalis fill our home with love and laughter.
The road hasn’t always been easy. Breeding Somalis comes with its share of highs and lows—celebrating the birth of a healthy litter, cheering for our cats at shows, but also navigating the heartache of unexpected challenges. Yet through it all, our commitment to these extraordinary cats has never wavered. We can’t imagine our lives without the pitter-patter of fluffy paws and the gentle tickle of their plumed tails.
The Great Move
In 2023, our journey took an exciting turn when we were offered the opportunity to relocate to the Netherlands. Accepting this chance meant uprooting our lives and undertaking the monumental task of moving our entire furry family—17 cats and 3 dogs—across continents. The logistics were daunting, but our love for our animals carried us through. By mid-2023, we settled into our new home in the charming village of Rijkevoort, where Valinor Somalis has found a fresh start. Our cattery now thrives in this serene setting, surrounded by the beauty of the Dutch countryside, where our cats bask in the freedom of spacious, sunlit rooms and a dedicated play area.
